!!~~ assist a heart attack victim~~!!

here's how you can help a friend or a relative when he/she suffers from a heart attack.

1. Call an ambulance. That should be the priority.

2. Don't panic. Ask the person suffering from the attack to try and relax. This will help reduce the damage to his/her heart.

3. Give the person an aspirin (300mg). Ask him/her to chew it or keep it under the tongue. If consumed with water, the tablet will take longer to react. Aspirin will reduce the aggression in the blood platelets (cells) and improve circulation.

4. You could also give the patient Sorbitrate (5mg). This tablet again, should be kept under the person's tongue. If the chest pain persists, you can give up to three tablets within the interval of five minutes. It is advisable for a person with heart-related disease to carry Sorbitrate (5mg) tablets with him/her. The tablet could reduce blood pressure and cause giddiness. If the patient feels giddy they should stop taking the tablet.

5. Other symptoms of a heart attack are vomiting and a burning stomach coupled with pain in the chest and upper arm. Do not confuse it with acidity.

6. Do not let the patient walk to the doctor. Always wait for the ambulance to arrive or a neighbour or a relative to help drive the person to the nearest hospital/nursing home with an intensive care unit (ICU).

7. If the patient collapses, revive him/her with CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation). Lock lips with the patient and gently exhale air into his/her lungs.

8. If the person gets sweaty or weak, get him/her to lie down and support his legs with two pillows.

9. Most importantly, even if the attack subsides, make sure the person is taken to the nearest nursing home/hospital with an ICU where an ECG (Electro cardiogram) can be taken. The doctor will then give him/her an injection to dissolve the blockage or conduct an angioplasty depending on the severity of the attack. Taking the patient to the nearest hospital an hour within the attack will reduce the amount of damage to his/her heart.

Heart-Friendly Foods for Vegetarians

Nutritionist Naini Setalvad and Consultant Dietician Sunita Dube whip-up a list of 100% vegetarian foods that will keep your heart fit and fab.

Berries
Berries like strawberries and cranberries are rich in antioxidants. “Antioxidants reduce the risk of heart disease,” says Consultant Dietician Sunita Dube. Antioxidants also help in reducing stress and thus prevents high blood pressure.
Other sources of antioxidants are tomatoes, red bell peppers, prunes and green tea. “Fruits with high water content, like watermelon are also recommended as they contain lycopene (a powerful antioxidant),” says Naini.

Nuts
Nuts like walnuts, almonds and pistachios are a good source of protein, fibre and are cholesterol-free. “They provide your body with the ‘good’ fat or monounsaturated fat that increase HDL or the good cholesterol which keeps your heart healthy,” says Sunita.

Seeds
“Include a good amount of seeds (up to 2 table spoons) like flax seeds (alsi), sunflower seeds (chironji) and pumpkin seeds (kaddu beej) in your diet,” says Naini. These are a good source of vitamin E, another powerful antioxidant. They also help lower cholesterol levels. They are a good source of minerals like magnesium, copper and selenium that help calm you nerves.

Lentils
Lentils like white chickpeas (kabuli chana) and red kidney beans (rajma) are a healthy source of protein and dietary fibre. “Fibre helps in reducing cholesterol, thus preventing heart-related problems,” says Naini. “They are also a good source of iron, vitamin B1 and folate,” says Sunita.

Green Leafy Vegetables
Greens! We can’t stop telling you how good they are for your health. Vegetables like spinach, fenugreek and broccoli are rich in iron and “powerful antioxidants that protect your heart against cholesterol,” says Nutritionist Naini Setalvad. They are also a good source of iron, magnesium and calcium.

Garlic
Raw garlic is a good source of antioxidants and “helps lower cholesterol levels,” says Naini. It also helps lower high blood pressure.
Turmeric is a heart-friendly spice too. It improves blood circulation thus preventing clots and preventing heart attacks.

Oils
Include a healthy amount of mustard oil and coconut oil in your diet. “Mustard oil has the same properties of olive oil and so can easily replace it,” says Naini. It contains monosaturated fats that lower the amount of bad cholesterol. “Limited use of coconut oil helps prevent heart attacks as it is a rich source of vitamin E, an antioxidant,” says Naini. Ghee, if used in moderation, helps lower cholesterol too.

“Combine a healthy diet with 30 minutes of exercise like skipping, running, walking, or aerobics combined with meditation everyday to keep heart diseases at bay,” says Sunita.

(Disclaimer: These foods help keep you heart healthy. However, have them in moderation and please consult your nutritionist, cardiologist and general physician before making any dietary changes.)

●O0o•●• Secrets For a Flat Stomach ●O0o•●•

Developing a lean, flat stomach takes time and patience, especially when it comes to those last few kilograms in those hard to lose places. There is only one way to lose fat in the so-called ’stubborn areas,’ and that is with the correct combination strength training (with a extra focus on mid-section), cardiovascular exercise (short, hard workouts), and stable blood sugar (keeps you from adding additional fat and makes it easier for the body to use body fat for fuel).

Spot Reduction is a Myth - The first thing you need to realize is that it is impossible to ’spot reduce’ fat from one specific part of the body. Fat loss occurs systemically, meaning that you can’t control where the fat comes from. When you burn fat for energy, you will draw it from all areas of the body, and the first place you tend to put it on will be the last place it comes off.

Cardio, cardio, cardio - Doing all the abs exercises in the world will do nothing if you have a layer of fat covering it. Doing strength training, or lifting weights, would help, but not as much as aerobic exercise. If you want to add some ab exercises in after the cardio, that’s great, but be sure to work your whole torso, not just the upper abs — that includes the lower abs, lower back and the muscles that wrap around your sides.

For example, Walking, jogging, bicycling, elliptical exercise and stair climbing are all great fat burners. Most give up early in the workout. During the first 10 minutes of aerobic activity, glycogen (stored carbohydrates) is the primary fuel source. Because you don’t burn significant amounts of fat until glycogen stores are depleted, the key to maximum fat loss is to work out aerobically for 30-60 minutes continuously per session.

Diet – Its best to stay away from fried food and too many sugary desserts. Abdominal fat loss is a 50% exercise, 50% nutrition combination. Regardless of how much you workout, if the number of calories you take in is greater than the amount you burn, you’ll still put on abdominal fat.

Eat Small Meals Regularly - You should try and spread your calories out into five small meals a day instead of 2 or 3 big ones so that you don’t overeat in one feeding.

Give it Time – If you want to have a flat stomach in 3 weeks, forget it. Losing fat takes time, and it’s unhealthy to lose too much weight too fast. Gradual weight loss is healthier, and more likely to be sustained over time. Go for a lifestyle change, something you can live with for the rest of your life, or you will just yo-yo. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Beer 'healthiest alcoholic drink'

Beer lovers, cheers! The drink is one of the healthiest alcoholic beverages available, when taken in moderation, a new study has claimed.

According to the study, commissioned by The Beer Academy, the drink is a rich source of vitamins, fibre, minerals and antioxidants and has relatively low calorific value as compared to other alcoholic beverages.

"Beer contains vitamins which can help you to maintain a well-balanced healthy diet, fibre to keep you regular, readily absorbed antioxidants and minerals such as silicon which may help to lower your risk of osteoporosis," a spokeswoman was quoted by the 'Daily Mail' as saying.

A survey found that while 68 per cent of people consider beer to be Britain's national drink, some 10 per cent wrongly believe that it contains fat, and 13 per cent believe the beverage is made from chemicals and not barley and hops.

The study also explores the psychological and sociability benefits of people enjoying a pint in their local pub -- yet pubs are closing at a rate of 39 a week. It argues the pub is at the heart of every community and a place where people go to enjoy company and find out local news.

Pete Brown, an award-winning author, said: "Still, we persist in the myth that somehow beer is an inferior drink to foreign imports such as wine. From Government receptions through to weddings and business occasions, wine rather than beer is served.

"It has been fashionable to look down on our own national drink in favour of overseas imports. But to do that is to turn our backs on our great British success story and our own heritage, and miss out on the myriad tastes and complexities that beer can offer."

!!~~ take big bites to loose weight ~~!!

The age-old advice to chew your food properly may not always be best for your health. Research shows that taking bigger bites and chewing less was better for people watching their weight.

Lincoln's Plant & Food Research scientists have been on a six-year mission to discover what foods make us feel satisfied and how best to eat them.

Team leader food structure engineering Marco Morgenstern said taking bigger bites and chewing less was better for people watching their weight as the food was broken down more slowly in the stomach.

This meant people felt fuller for longer and the slow release of energy could be burnt off over time.

However, sportspersons need the quick energy hit from partially digesting food in the mouth, so they would be better off eating softer foods and chewing for longer.

'The way people chew the food depends more on the food's properties, not the individual, so you can design food which people won't chew much and [food they] will chew a lot,' Morgenstern said.

Baking technology scientist Arran Wilson spends his days making different sizes and structures of muesli bars to test the research.

Bars could be made to help people with diseases such as diabetes who needed slow-release food to keep their glucose levels stable.

Business manager Tim Lindley said the research team had tested 3,000 foods for their effect on blood glucose levels, reflecting how quickly they released energy into the body.

Their findings included the benefits of eating whole-oat muesli and wholegrain bread which made people feel satisfied for longer. Pasta was also found to have slow-release energy.

Lindley said fad diets that encouraged people to stop eating carbohydrates were unhealthy. About half of a person's food energy intake should be carbohydrates, the key was knowing which ones to eat and when, he said according to a University of Canterbury release.

Drink water in empty stomach......

DRINK WATER IN EMPTY STOMACH

It is popular in Japan today to drink water immediately after waking up every morning. Furthermore, scientific tests have proven its value. We publish below a description of use of water for our readers. For old and serious diseases as well as modern illnesses the water treatment had been found successful by a Japanese medical society as a 100% cure for the following diseases:

Headache, body ache, heart system, arthritis, fast heart beat, epilepsy, excess fatness, bronchitis asthma, TB, meningitis, kidney and urine diseases, vomiting, gastritis, diarrhea, piles, diabetes, constipation, all eye diseases, womb, cancer and menstrual disorders, ear nose and throat diseases.

METHOD OF TREATMENT

1. As you wake up in the morning before brushing teeth, drink 4 x 160ml glasses of water .....interesting

2. Brush and clean the mouth but do not eat or drink anything for 45 minutes

3. After 45 minutes you may eat and drink as normal.

4. After 15 minutes of breakfast, lunch and dinner do not eat or drink anything for 2 hours

5. Those who are old or sick and are unable to drink 4 glasses of water at the beginning may commence by taking little water and gradually increase it to 4 glasses per day.

6. The above method of treatment will cure diseases of the sick and others can enjoy a healthy life.

The following list gives the number of days of treatment required to cure/control/reduce main diseases:

1. High Blood Pressure - 30 days

2. Gastric - 10 days

3. Diabetes - 30 days

4. Constipation - 10 days

5. Cancer - 180 days

6. TB - 90 days

7. Arthritis patients should follow the above treatment only for 3 days in the 1st week, and from 2nd week onwards - daily.

This treatment method has no side effects, however at the commencement of treatment you may have to urinate a few times.

It is better if we continue this and make this procedure as a routine work in our life.

Drink Water and Stay healthy and Active.

This makes sense .. The Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals ..not cold water. Maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating!!! Nothing to lose, everything to gain...

For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you.
It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion.
Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

Blood test can alert you to lung cancer

TORONTO: Lung cancer may now be detected early with a simple blood test, doing away with the need for invasive biopsies, according to new study by an Indian American.

"These findings suggest that lung cancers interact with circulating white blood cells and change the types of genes that are active in these cells," explained Anil Vachani of the University of Pennsylvania.

"We found that the types of genes present in these cells could tell us whether or not cancer was present," he added.

The finding can be potentially used to develop a non-invasive diagnostic and painless test for patients suspected of having lung cancer, he noted.

The possibility of developing such a test to differentiate between cancerous and benign lesions has enormous implications for the world of medicine and those awaiting conclusive biopsy results after preliminary testing.

"CT screening results in the detection of lung nodules in 20 to 60 per cent of subjects," said Vachani.

"This high false-positive rate requires patients to undergo extensive follow-up investigations, such as serial CT scans, PET scans or biopsies. This test may be able to obviate the need for such things if it is developed into a large-scale diagnostic tool."

Lung cancer is a very diverse disease, and screening for it can be very difficult. Vachani hoped to identify a stable and consistent way of determining the presence of lung cancer by testing for the gene expression of white blood cells.

Rather than screening for factors released by the tumour into the blood stream, the test Vachani used looked at gene expression in the subject's own circulating white blood cells.

To test the accuracy of the method, the researchers studied 44 patients with early stage lung cancer and 52 control subjects who were matched for age, smoking status, gender and race.

They then used a number of genetic arrays to determine the best targets for detecting the presence of cancer. They found that a 15-gene array had the highest accuracy, at 87 per cent.

"If our results are encouraging, we would like to test this in a prospective clinical trial," Vachani said.

Findings of the study were unveiled on Tuesday at the American Thoracic Society's International Conference here.

Bananas prevent HIV infection

Bananas prevent HIV infection

Chemicals found in bananas are better at preventing HIV than two current synthetic anti-HIV drugs, according to new study.

A banana a day to keep HIV away?Your favorite oblong fruit might be even healthier than you realized. According to The Gazette (Montreal) newspaper, a new study has found that chemicals commonly found in bananas are as potent in preventing HIV as two synthetic anti-HIV drugs. Researchers say the findings could lead to a cheap new component for applied microbicides that prevent sexual transmission of HIV.

The miracle substance in bananas is called BanLec, a type of lectin, which are the sugar-binding proteins found in a variety of plants. Scientists have long been interested in lectins because of their ability to halt the chain reaction that leads to certain viral infections. In the case of BanLec, it works by binding naturally to the sugar-rich envelope that encases the HIV virus, thus blocking its entry into the body.

"The problem with some HIV drugs is that the virus can mutate and become resistant, but that's much harder to do in the presence of lectins," said lead author Michael D. Swanson. "Lectins can bind to the sugars found on different spots of the HIV-1 envelope, and presumably it will take multiple mutations for the virus to get around them."

Swanson and his colleagues noted that even modest success in developing BanLec into a vaginal or anal microbicide could save millions of lives. In fact, 20 percent coverage with a microbicide that is only 60 percent effective against HIV may prevent up to 2.5 million HIV infections in three years. Furthermore, a BanLec ointment would be much cheaper to produce and distribute than most current anti-retroviral medications that require the production of synthetic components.

One thing's for sure: new ways of stopping the transmission of HIV are desperately needed. Condoms are effective, but they are often used incorrectly or inconsistently, and in many cultures and developing countries women are not always in control of their sexual encounters. The introduction of a cheap, long-lasting, self-applied ointment derived naturally from bananas could change all of that.

Tips to Burn calories

Get active in your daily life: Burn calories without going to the gym

The importance of a healthy diet and regular exercise cannot be overstated. Along with these essentials it also helps to lead an active lifestyle that helps keep your metabolism high and calories burning. Here are some tips you can incorporate in your daily life:

Take the stairs

Avoid the temptation to always take the lift. Taking the stairs instead will help keep you active and feeling energetic all day.

Walk to your colleague

Most communication in offices nowdays is done over some type of Messenger service. Instead of always "pinging" your co-worker, why not walk over and talk to him in person? Your legs will thank you for the break

Don't lust after the closest parking spot

Parking is usually a major source of stress in modern cities. Avoid the heartache that comes with trying to find the closest parking spot to your destination. Park where you get a spot easily and walk those extra few steps. It's good for your body and your mind.

Walk to the kirana store

Most big cities come equipped with neighbourhood grocery stores that are happy to send their boy for everything - from your monthly groceries to one urgent loaf of bread. How about actually walkingh down to the store yourself for a change?

Get a dog

A dog at home will keep you active, even if you don't want it! Dogs need to be walked twice a day and they can really make you run around. It's a big commitment but the love, joy and exercise you get in return is a worthwhile pay off.

Give your domestic help a day off

Experience the joy of cleaning your own dishes and sweeping and swabbing the floor! Well, at least for one day every week! Swabbing is a particularly good exercise for your buns and thighs and you can finally clean those hard-to-reach spots you've been nagging your maid about

Walk while you talk

Like a recent mobile phone company advised, it's a great idea to walk while you're on the phone. You stay active and also don't disturb your colleagues or family with your phone chatter.

Step out of the house at least once a day

If you're a home maker or work from home, you'll find that the whole day can go by without a trip outside. Make it a point to step out at least once - maybe for a walk in the park, a shopping jaunt or a quick coffee.

Use public transport

Some cities in India now have excellent public transport. Taking the metro or the bus is not only good for the environment, but also helps take the pressure off vehicular traffic and keeps you active and calm (you don't have to worry about making that next green light!)

Remind yourself to get more active

Do your own chores, fetch your own water, stretch from time to time, dance while getting ready for work and walk even when you can avoid it. If you make your lifestyle more active, you'll find that you're more energetic and fitter in general.
